Melanotan (MT2)

What is it?

Melanotan II (MT2) is a hugely popular synthetic peptide famous for supporting a deeper, sun-kissed tan — often with less time in the sun. It has a big following for that reason, and it's also discussed in relation to libido, giving it a double appeal.

Why people choose it

  • Famous for a golden, sun-kissed tan
  • Popular for tanning with less sun exposure
  • Also discussed for libido support
  • A standout in the skin-and-appearance space

What is it used for?

  • Skin pigmentation and tanning
  • A deeper, longer-lasting tan
  • Libido support

How it works

MT2 is discussed in relation to the pathways that control skin pigment, which is why it's so associated with tanning — and the same family of pathways ties into its libido reputation.

Good to know

  • A summer favourite for that golden look.
  • Often mentioned alongside PT-141 for wellness.
  • One of the most recognisable appearance peptides.

  • Do not aspirate for subcutaneous injections — inject slowly and steadily.
  • Wait 5–10 seconds before withdrawing, then apply gentle pressure. Do not rub the site.
  • Rotate sites systematically — abdomen (at least 5 cm from the navel), thighs and upper arms — to avoid lipohypertrophy.
  • Use a new sterile 28–31 G insulin syringe every time and dispose of it in a sharps container.

Reported side effects

  • Dose-dependent nausea
  • Facial flushing
  • Reduced appetite
  • Spontaneous erections / increased libido
  • Injection-site reactions

Safety & evidence

  • Do not exceed 2 mg per day — severe sympathomimetic symptoms and rhabdomyolysis have been reported at 6 mg.
  • May alter the pigmentation of existing moles; theoretical melanoma concerns warrant caution.
  • Not FDA-approved.
  • Use a 29–31 G, ½ inch needle and release the pinched skinfold after inserting.
